Chicago Cubs · Chicago
Wrigley Field is the historic home of the Chicago Cubs and the second-oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball, located in the Lakeview neighborhood known as Wrigleyville. Famous for its ivy-covered walls, hand-operated scoreboard and red marquee, it is one of the most beloved venues in American sports.
Address: 1060 West Addison Street, Chicago, IL 60613
The ballpark opened in 1914 as Weeghman Park, built for restaurateur Charles Weeghman's Chicago Whales of the Federal League. When that league folded, Weeghman acquired the Cubs, who began playing there in 1916. Chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. gained control of the team in the early 1920s, and the park was renamed Wrigley Field for the 1927 season. The 1930s brought defining features still seen today, including the iconic marquee and, in 1937, both the outfield ivy and the hand-operated scoreboard. Wrigley was the last MLB park to install lights, finally hosting night baseball in 1988. A multi-year restoration in the 2010s upgraded the structure while preserving its vintage character.
Wrigley Field earned the nickname "The Friendly Confines" for its intimate, throwback charm. The Boston ivy on the brick outfield walls and the manually operated scoreboard give the park a timeless feel. The general-admission bleachers are among the most coveted tickets in sports, sitting just behind the ivy. Outside, the neighborhood becomes part of the show: fans watch from rooftop clubs across Sheffield and Waveland avenues, while "ballhawks" gather on the street to chase home runs. Day games bask in full sun, and the surrounding Wrigleyville bars keep the energy high.
Chicago classics dominate, starting with the Vienna Beef hot dog and Chicago-style dogs loaded with grilled onions. Local favorites include Home Run Inn thin-crust pizza, Garrett Popcorn, brats and burgers.
Bleacher tickets are general admission during the regular season, so arrive early to claim a spot; bring sun protection for day games. For shaded reserved seating with clear views, upper-deck sections behind home plate are free of obstructions. The CTA Red Line's Addison stop sits right outside the park, making the "L" the recommended way to arrive.
