Robert De Niro is more than a Tribeca resident — he is Tribeca's franchise player. He co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival in 2002 with Jane Rosenthal after 9/11 to bring foot traffic back to the neighborhood, and the festival has been an annual June fixture ever since. De Niro is also the most famous restaurant investor in the neighborhood: he co-founded Nobu with chef Nobu Matsuhisa and Meir Teper, opening the original Nobu in Tribeca in 1994 (now relocated to Nobu Downtown at 195 Broadway). The Tribeca Grill, his other long-running co-venture with restaurateur Drew Nieporent, closed in March 2025 after 35 years — but Nobu remains the De Niro restaurant in downtown Manhattan, and a likely after-party stop during Tribeca Festival week.
