Daikin Park
Houston Astros · Houston
Daikin Park is the downtown Houston home of the Astros, a retractable-roof ballpark known for its climate control, a short left-field porch and a full-size replica steam locomotive perched above the outfield. It carried the name Minute Maid Park for over two decades before being renamed Daikin Park.
Address: 501 Crawford Street, Houston, TX 77002
History
The ballpark opened on April 7, 2000, replacing the indoor Astrodome. Houston voters approved public funding in a 1996 referendum, and the design folded in the historic 1911 Union Station building as a left-field entrance. It debuted as Enron Field, was briefly Astros Field in 2002 after the energy company's collapse, then became Minute Maid Park later that year. In late 2024 the Astros sold naming rights to the Japanese air-conditioning manufacturer Daikin, and the venue became Daikin Park beginning in 2025. A 2017 renovation removed Tal's Hill, the quirky sloped center-field incline, reshaping the outfield for the modern era.
The Ballpark Experience
The retractable roof, which can open or close in roughly 20 minutes, keeps the park comfortable through brutal Houston summers. The Crawford Boxes, a block of seats jutting into shallow left field at about 315 feet, make for a tantalizing home-run target. Above them runs an 800-foot track carrying a 24-ton replica steam locomotive that chugs along after Astros home runs and wins, a nod to Houston's railroad past via adjacent Union Station. Interactive areas for children and a downtown setting near restaurants round out a lively, modern environment.
Food & Drink
Texas barbecue anchors the menu, with stands serving long-smoked brisket, chopped-brisket sandwiches and loaded baked potatoes. Inventive specialties have included brisket-stuffed waffle sandwiches and banh mi-inspired hot dogs, alongside Texas-favorite Whataburger.
Visiting Tips
For an iconic experience, target the Crawford Boxes in left field, both for the home-run chance and the view of the train. Infield club and lower-bowl seats offer the best all-around sightlines. The downtown location is well served by Houston's METRORail and is walkable from many bars and restaurants. With the roof, weather is rarely a concern.
