History

Major League Baseball returned to Washington in 2005 when the Montreal Expos relocated and became the Nationals, initially playing at aging RFK Stadium. City leaders moved quickly on a permanent home, unveiling plans in 2006 for a modern ballpark in Southeast D.C. Designed by HOK Sport, the stadium opened in 2008, financed largely through District bonds, and helped catalyze the redevelopment of the surrounding Navy Yard district. Its glass-and-steel exterior broke from the retro brick wave. The ballpark hosted the 2018 All-Star Game and, in 2019, the franchise's first World Series games en route to a championship.

The Ballpark Experience

Nationals Park blends a contemporary, open design with distinctly Washington touches: from upper-deck seats along the third-base side, fans can see the U.S. Capitol dome and the Washington Monument. Open concourses and clean sightlines keep the action visible. Kwanzan cherry trees beyond the outfield bloom each spring, echoing the city's famous blossoms, and the Homestead Grays Bar honors D.C.'s Negro League heritage. The atmosphere mixes a relaxed, family-friendly feel with the energy of the Racing Presidents mascot dash.

Food & Drink

D.C. flavors anchor the menu, led by Ben's Chili Bowl and its half-smoke sausage piled "all the way" with chili, mustard and onions. The park rotates in local vendors offering fried chicken sandwiches, dumplings and regional craft beers.

Visiting Tips

For skyline and monument views, choose upper-deck seats on the third-base side. Premium options include the padded Delta Club behind home plate. The Navy Yard-Ballpark Metro stop on the Green Line drops fans steps from the gates. Consider eating at nearby Navy Yard restaurants first.
